12th January 2018 - It’s time!
What an incredible life pole-vaulting has given me. I spent twenty years consciously dedicating my time to becoming a true professional in my sport and it paid off in ways that I could've only dreamed of.
To say ‘I have been privileged to have great people in my life’ would be an understatement. Sometimes I can’t believe who ‘showed up’ and inspired me to new heights and invested time into my development as an athlete and person....
I love sport because my achievements can never be taken away: Two Time Olympian, Commonwealth Games Gold Medalist and National Record Holder. These will always be remembered as the moments when I was able to ‘let go’ and believe in my dream.
I want to thank every single person who ever sponsored, supported, cheered, sent kind messages or even just took a moment to think about me in times of joy and sadness. Tonight in Reno, Nevada, I will step out onto the runway one last time to draw a line under my career and it just so happens that it falls on my mums birthday… a perfect way to retire!
I’m looking forward to sharing my future plans and retirement with everyone but for now I am heading to the arena with Leah and Eli to share a moment with 3000+ pole-vaulters and close friends at the 2018 National Pole Vault Summit.
"Being at ALTIS has taught me that it’s my own mindfulness and ability to stay open to learning that is key to continued growth on and off the track. My advice ...to new athletes would be to put a priority on using the coaches’ knowledge to fast-track progression, set realistic goals that are achievable, and stay positive through adversity." - Steve Lewis (photo courtesy of justynwarner.com)
Commonwealth Games Champion, British Outdoor record holder, 5th Olympic Games in London, 2 current World A Standards and able to compete all around the world, but I can't get confirmation in my HOME DIAMOND LEAGUE in London as part of World Championship preparation. I accepted that I got dropped from british funding but this lack of thought towards home athletes is starting to bug me. Lets watch Paris to see how many french athletes pole vault there, probably 5 because that's important to the country and organisers who back the athletes. I want to compete in front of the amazing home crowd who support me and other British Athletes. I can't even do my sport in my home country without a fight.
