  • Steven M. Newman was listed in the Guinness Book of World Records for being the first person documented to walk solo around the world. In 1983, the journalist set out from his Bethel, Ohio, home and traversed five continents and over 20 countries in four years.
    Former cross country runner -- high school and college--as well as a uranium prospector in Wyoming and New Mexico during the summers while attending Ohio University,1972-77.
    Graduated cum laude with journalism degree. Went to work right away as a reporter for the Casper (WY) Star-Tribune.
    Walked solo around world in the 1980s.
    Recipient of dozens of high honors, including Ohio University's and home state's highest honors and a honorary doctorate degree in Humanities from Capital University.
    Longest hiking trail in Ohio's state parks named after him.
    Author or co-author of three books: Worldwalk, Letters From Steven, and Guardians of Yellowstone Park.
