If you're like all of us at Street Medics Austin feeling helpless as we watched Hurricane Laura make landfall, and now you're sitting here in the aftermath wondering what you can do to help, here is a good place to start. Our concerned hearts go out to all those affected directly and indirectly by Hurricane Laura. In disastrous situations, when you are feeling anxious and at a loss for what you can do, remember the words of Fred Rogers - "Look for the helpers. You will always find people who are helping." And we say, here at SMA, do what you can to help those people as soon as you find them. Individually, we're all helping where we can, and we encourage all of you to start here and find the ways you can help.

If you're going to be outdoors in the extreme heat, please proactively hydrate. We're not aware of any events, so Street Medics Austin is not currently planning to deploy this weekend. If you're planning an upcoming event and want to have SMA available to provide aid when needed, please reach out via Facebook message or send us an email to StreetMedicsAustin@gmail.com

Hydrate, stay cool, and be excellent to each other.

107.

That’s how hot it is here today.

And that’s the ACTUAL temperature, y’all. Don’t even ask us what it is with the heat index.

...

So with this extreme heat—and more on the way tomorrow—AFD and Austin-Travis County Emergency Medical Services are currently responding to multiple rescues of overheated patients from area greenbelts. We need you to please limit outdoor activities to early morning or later in the evening, avoid the heat of the day, stay hydrated, and never leave children or pets unattended in cars, even for a few minutes.
