I am performing tomorrow for this wonderful solo piano series which brings together 4 pianists in Seattle around the work of great jazz pianists/composers. So far I have taken part in performing the music of Sun Ra and Bud Powell. Tomorrow ...features the music of Keith Jarrett and Paul Bley. Thanks to Wayne Horvitz for his creative presenting and for all that the Royal Room does for the jazz community in Seattle. I want to share some of what I have learned in learning music of these two great musicians.
Paul Bley and Keith Jarrett- 2 facts and a quote
1.Here is an incomplete list of some of the great musician Paul Bley performed with- Charlie Parker, Lester Young, Ben Webster, Sonny Rollins, Charles Mingus, Ornette Coleman, Art Blakey, Don Cherry, Charlie Haden, Billy Higgins, Jon Gilmore, Jiimmie Guiffre….!!!!
2.Paul Bley pioneered the use of Moog synthesizers, performing with them before a live audience for the first time at Philharmonic Hall in New York City on December 26, 1969.[4]
A Quote from Paul Bley
“There are not enough words to describe the details of what we do. A lot of people are called musicians, but there should be ten or twenty terms used to refer to people who make music. . .That's always the goal, to make interesting or beautiful sounds.”
1.Keith Jarrett has performed with the same trio, featuring Jack Dejohnette on drums and Gary Peacock on bass for nearly 30 years.
2.Ecstasy, connectivity and sensitivity are among the qualities Keith Jarrett most values in making music.
A quote from Keith Jarrett
“Jazz is there and gone. It happens. You have to be present for it. That simple.”
