My White Sapote is just starting to flower, something that may happen twice a year, and different varieties can bloom at different times.
It is unrelated to the previously mentioned Black Sapote. Sapote is an Aztec word that means "soft sweet fruit". Black Sapote is in the Ebony family, related to persimmon; White Sapote is in the Rutacaea family and a distant cousin to citrus. If you aren't already confused, Mamey Sapote, Chiku Sapote (Sapodilla) and Yellow Sapote (Canistel) are all in the Sapotaceae family.
Back to the White Sapote, this article may pique your interest:

Yes, you can grow it in the Treasure Coast. It is much more cold tolerant than the Black Sapote. It is also a very fast grower, and the roots can be aggressive, so plant it some distance from your house.

White sapote trees may have been trendy 50 years ago, but these days they are empty-lot plants, the kind of urban flora most often seen sprouting from scattered seed in some neglected patch of...

Black Sapote is a fruit that is producing right now! (December through February) Does it taste like Chocolate Pudding? The color, the silky smooth texture, especially when stirred, makes it easy to imagine it does. Add a dash of vanilla and a little cocoa mix to hide the fruity overtone, and you will be sure it *is* chocolate pudding. With vitamins A & C, plus potassium and low fat, you can enjoy it guilt free.

You will know it is mature (but not yet ripe) when the little ruf...fle around the stem end lifts away from the fruit. Let it sit on the counter for several days. The skin will change from Granny Smith green to olive then dark olive. When it is so soft there is about a 2" flat spot on the bottom and you think it may be ready for the compost heap, it is perfectly ripe. Cut around the "equator", remove and discard the seeds and seed casings. Now scoop out the pulp being careful to leave the skin behind.

It might seem like mankind has come up with most of the deliciously devilish flavours and midnight snacks for us to indulge in, but if you look a little harder, in many cases I think you'll find that nature was there first, waiting to tempt us all along... Behold the Black Sapote, a.k.a "the Choc

Force your budwood into growth mode prior to grafting.
Note the three swollen buds in the photo. There are three others not visible on the other side. About a week before cutting off the leaves, the buds were barely visible and flush with the base of each leaf. Be sure to watch the linked videos to see how grafting is done.

UPDATE: Your hands-on homework to get ready for October’s grafting theory workshop is to find a tree you would like to graft. On a few branches, cut off the end leaves to encourage the termin…
