Government must prepare for defeats on Brexit Bill

Liberal Democrats in the House of Lords have thrown their weight behind a series of cross party amendments to the EU Withdrawal Bill warning the government must expect to be defeated on a swathe of key issues.

Lord Newby, the Leader of the Liberal Democrats in the House of Lords, confirmed the party’s support for amendments including some with would maintain Britain’s place in the customs union, limit ministers' powers to create crimes without passing new laws and strengthen Parliament’s vote on the Brexit deal.

Liberal Democrat Brexit Spokesperson Tom Brake has secured an emergency debate in the Commons on the allegations of Vote Leave wrongdoing during the EU referendum.

Ahead of the debate Tom Brake said:

"Since last week there has been a constant drip of allegations about Vote Leave's actions during the EU referendum.

...

The British people must not be cheated and deserve answers.

Given the closeness of the EU referendum result, and its impact on the UK’s future, it would be an absolute travesty of democracy if these allegations were not thoroughly investigated by the appropriate authorities."

LETTER TO REGIONAL PRESS

Dear Sirs,

Thousands lined the streets of Leeds on Saturday to demonstrate against Brexit. We must thank the organisers, the police and other bodies for allowing this to happen.

...

With 12 months to go, the Prime Minister and her Government have failed to tell us what sort of relationship we will have in the future with our neighbours and friends in mainland Europe.

The transitional agreement simply pushes negotiations on our future relationship off further, with Britain still following EU rules for another 20 months without having a say in the rules.

We risk losing the European Single Market, which we fought to create, and which makes it easy for our businesses to operate in.

In pursing Brexit, the government has allocated £3bn to expand the civil service to cope with leaving the EU. This is money that could have been spent on the NHS and in our schools. More will be spent on recreating UK agencies to replace those we shared with our neighbours.

The Leave campaign promised that ‘independence’ from the EU would be easy and that Britain would remain inside the Single Market and the Customs Union. However, they and the Government have insisted that we must leave both, without explaining the implications of doing so.

Liam Fox and David Davis told us that we would have free trade agreements with other major countries by the time we left the EU. Instead, President Trump is putting up trade barriers, the Indian Government has made it clear that it will expect greater freedom for migration to Britain in return for more open trade, and China sees the UK as weaker outside the EU.

For hard-line Brexiteers, little else matters beyond ‘freeing’ the UK from the EU. For the rest of us, we see our children's future, jobs, peace and security at risk from being isolated. It is why we will continue to fight for an Exit from Brexit.

Yours faithfully,

Kamran Hussain
Yorkshire and Humber Liberal Democrats Regional Chair and Brexit Spokesperson

Responding to reports that parents have been fined £24 million for term time holidays, education spokesperson, Layla Moran, said:

“Of course local authorities have a duty to ensure children are regularly attending school and receiving their education, but these fines are often used in a way which is far too heavy handed.

"For many families the cost of going away during the school holidays is prohibitive, and we must remember that being able to spend time away with family, an...d learning about another place or culture, is beneficial for children too.

"Head teachers are best placed to understand the needs of a child and their family. They should be given the discretion to grant children up to ten days of holiday during term time if they can reasonably make up the missed work and not overburden their teachers. We need a much more sensible and even handed approach to this issue".

"There is no more eloquent testimony to the government's utter naivety about trade, that at a time when the world is descending into trade war, they put more faith in the Wild West warmonger in Washington and the bully of Beijing than they do in our established friends and trade partners in Europe."
