There's an interesting passage inside this article on the struggles of the Atlanta Streetcar.

"MARTA board chair Robbie Ashe said the transit agency also learned another important lesson from the streetcar’s struggles. Expect the next round of plans to include a separate transit-only lane for the blue cars. “Dedicated right of ways are important so you’re not running a train that has the opportunity to be stuck behind a car,” he said."

Can dedicated lanes be worked into a ro...ute that connects the current streetcar to the Beltline? Is Atlanta ready for the idea of losing lanes of car traffic for the purpose of adding new street rail? We'd better be ready -- otherwise we're squandering the potential for streetcars to be true alternative to driving.

MARTA looks to the Feds to help fund a Northside Drive bus-rapid-transit (BRT) route that could connect riders to Atlantic Station, Georgia Tech, the stadiums, Atlanta University Center & the Beltline’s Westside trail.

Importantly, the buses would run in dedicated lanes, every 10 minutes, morning, noon and night, as well as on the weekends.

Georgia has awarded $75 million in transit grants to agencies across the state. Atlantans will see improved communications systems in MARTA stations and upgrades to regional-bus stops Downtown.

Does this signal a new interest on the part of the state in finding transit services? If so, that would signal a big turnaround for Georgia which is not known for having a transit-friendly budget.

Take a look at these incredible numbers on the low housing supply in the US. Likely a contributing factor to our shortage of affordable housing in cities. With pressure on limited supply, sale and rent prices are bound to be inflated -- which hits the poorest the hardest.

Supply will eventually catch up as builders start work on more new houses, but the gap is expected to grow for several years even if household formation doesn't.

Very nice writeup from Creative Loafing Atlanta on the two transportation measures that could potentially end up on City of Atlanta ballots this year. Is Atlanta ready to fund new transit and new "bike trails, sidewalk and road projects" with a sales tax hike, all at the same time?

When it comes to big, transformative projects in the city's center, the design should move Atlanta toward a better transportation future -- rather than simply being a reflection of the car-centric, recent past.

In these old photos of Union Station in Downtown Atlanta you see a small amount of car parking and a whole lot of train capacity. In 100 years time, the priorities of this parcel have flipped.

This space that once housed Union Station is roughly where a state-owned p...arking deck currently stands. A parking deck that the City of Atlanta wants to obtain from the state so that it can provide even more parking for Underground Atlanta.

The mayor and other Atlanta leaders have said some impressive, bold things about the city having a future based on transit rather than cars. So then why, when it comes to actual projects being developed, are we still seeing cars get such a priority?
