Painting the Town...

"Tim Neath is a Leicester-based artist and studio holder at Two Queens. He has an interest in the imagery of Hollywood film, and works with cardboard and craft materials to create model miniatures. His models are then used as miniature film sets, which Tim populates with a cast of characters repurposed from vintage playsets. The resulting animation, photography and video works combine a classic and familiar language of set design with the throwaway nature of cardboard and cheap plastic toys. Attenborough Arts Centre is supporting Tim to develop Cowboys Invaded, a reworking of the comic book and film Cowboys and Aliens. Cowboys Invaded reimagines an alien invasion of Earth, setting it in 19th century America. At this time, the idea of manifest destiny – a belief that White Americans had a god-given destiny to settle and reshape North America – led to the Westward expansion of people from the densely populated East of the continent. The idea of manifest destiny was used to justify the forced removal of Native Americans from their homes, and the rapid expansion of White settlers also intensified slavery. Since that time, the idea of manifest destiny has entered into the myth of the American West and is woven through the film genre of the Western. In Cowboys Invaded the aliens assume the role of the invader in America, which leads to an occupation that both the Native American peoples and White settlers have to adapt to."
