I use to love this place! I worked here briefly a couple years ago, but still tried to visit off and on whenever I was in the Williamsburg area because the coffee, food and service were always great. ...Hadn't visited in a while but decided to bring a friend who had never been, since I always raved about it. Unfortunately we were greeted (barely) by rude staff who not only looked miserable, but had very little interest in providing my friend, a first time visitor, with suggestions. She's not super into coffee, but I assured her that Toby's was great and she'd like whatever they suggested. They were totally unresponsive, I had to ask if the guy had heard me since he didn't say anything when I ordered. We also didn't even want to attempt food at that point. Definitely not what I remembered, while I'd most likely return, my friend said she definitely wouldn't be back. See More

I have previously rated Toby's 5* for great coffee and awsome service.
However, my last two visits this weekend have been a disappointment.
I've visited the place many times when I've been in W'burg....
Yesterday I ordered two cappuccinos and a drip coffee.
I asked if the Ethiopian was washed or natural, where the barista replied she thought it was washed...Anyway,
The cappuccinos where not cappuccinos, they were flatwhites. No foam,at all.
One was fine with it but I asked the barista to please make another cappuccino. She replied with: Oh,you wanted a dry one? I said: no I would like a cappuccino, not a flat white.
When she had redone the drink she called out "DRY cappuccino" in a very rude tone.
For some reason she was angry with me..
When we got the drink it still had no foam(not even dry..) but what made me most upset was the fact that she had made an under-extracted espresso so that the drink would taste horrible! I spent over $20 for bad drinks and an akward experience.
I didn't want to complain again and make a scene so we just left.
I've worked in the speciality coffee industry for over ten years,so I know how to make a cappuccino, dry and wet, in case you were wondering.
I usually don't leave comments like this unless they are positive but I feel it's such a shame that a great place like Toby's makes me feel that I don't want to come back. Please adjust the attitudes of the staff, because our experience could have been so much better.
We've also visited Blue Bottle the days we have been here, and the service and coffee have been 5*

I brought 25 very thirsty Aussies in at 11 in the morning on a Saturday and they turned out the Flat Whites and the avocoado toasts in no time at all! It kept our tour running on time and everyone lov...ed it. Way to go! Thank you.

Avocado toast definitely worth the wait. 3 stars for not finding a seat to sit and eat while tables full of people on laptops not eating or drinking. Beans I took home- ah so so

One of the best spots I have been to for a pour over. It is evident from the moment you walk in that they pride themselves in your entire experience.

Seriously the best latte I have had in a very long time. Perfect texture, temperature, and the espresso was a great bitter-sweet. Definitely worth the three dollars.

The best place for coffee in New York - great service and an incredible ambience. So cool! Tip: Try the Flat White

Great spot- a little pretentious. But the whole area is. Great coffee shame about the soy milk, what about importing some Bonsoy?

A little piece of home in Brooklyn. Whether you're after a flat white or a long black they get your lingo.

Such a disappointment. I was looking forward to a good coffee but this $5 soy latte was warm and flat and way too big.
