It's so important to raise girls to be tough, fearless, and independent. We want our girls to lead and inspire. Happy #DayoftheGirl!

I have the best friends.
I called on some of the strongest, most beautifully empowering women I know, to throw a huge summit for teenage girls and they all sai...d "Yes!" - and this is what we did with it:
76 girls flew in from Hawaii to New York, families drove from New Mexico, hurricane devastated Houston, Kansas, and everywhere in between. They learned about things I could have only dreamed of learning when I was a young teenage swimmer, and all from the best in the business.
I'm still nursing my LEAD Sports Summit hangover - and I might be for another 353 days, but in the meantime, I have things like this to watch.
The Olympic Channel flew to Austin to cover our event and the piece is amazing.
Thank you to all my friends and to all the parents who trusted me with their girls for 3 incredible days in Austin, TX.
Check out SwimSwam's video recap of LEAD Sports Summit! Kara, Missy, and others led an empowering experience to a group of young ladies this past Labor Day.

Lives got rocked this past weekend at LEAD Sports Summit, and I'm not just talking about the 76 girls that attended, but all of us speaking and working it too! ...
The whole time, I kept thinking, do these girls understand what they're experiencing? They are learning about nutrition from Jen Brunelli, one of the best nutritionists in the game. They are learning about leadership from Elizabeth Beisel, 3x Olympian and captain for the US Olympic team. They're learning about perseverance from Missy Franklin, 5x Olympic gold medalist. Like, what?? Seriously? And one of my favorite parts of the weekend was the panel that I got to lead after my talk about confidence, as we asked Beisel, Missy, Kara, Madisyn Cox (world champs bronze medalist) and Eva Fabian (one of the best open water swimmers in the world) questions about confidence. And they didn't give fluff answers. They gave the truth. The brutal truth. And they let those girls know that they are not alone in feeling fear and struggling with confidence. It was life changing! And again, I just kept thinking, do these girls understand what they're experiencing hearing some of the very best in the world sharing their truth?! It was unbelievable, and honestly, there are no words to explain what I'm feeling right now. Just grateful I got to be a part of it! And so grateful that Kara Lynn Joyce had the courage to "embrace her uniqueness" and put on a summit like no one has ever done before! This is just the beginning!

For #internationalwomensday I am going to show strength by showing you one of my weakest and proudest moments. I took this picture as I was sitting alone in the... Olympic Village in Rio, watching on tv as our final 800 Women's freestyle relay won gold. I was overwhelmed with disbelief at winning my fifth gold medal and also in disappointment, because that was not at all how I had expected to win it. But in that moment, I CHOSE to have strength. I CHOSE to be the woman I knew I could be. So I celebrated the five other incredible women who helped me achieve this goal, cried (an embarrassing amount) out of pure pride, joy, and love, when I saw them on the medal stand. Being a strong woman looks and feels different to every person. Be your version of strength every day of your life
💛 I encourage all of you beautiful women to not only share your strongest moments, but how you were strong in your weakest moments. Those are the moments where we inspire others the most.
