Fun Fact Friday!

Ever heard of the Gator Apple Tree? Alligators are seen eating Pond Apples (or Custard Apples) during the summer, especially as they plop into ...the water.
While summer rains replenish water supplies and bring plants back to life in the Everglades, it's a tough time for alligators. As fish, turtles and wading birds follow increasing water and spread out across the Glades, food becomes scarce for alligators. (RM)

Contrary to popular belief, you will not have a big spike in your cholesterol level after eating a durian. In fact, this king of fruits has good monounsaturated fats that can actually lower your harmful cholesterol levels and moderate your high blood pressure.

Durian stinks so badly that it’s banned from airplanes, hotels and mass transit in most Southeast Asian cities. So why does the author adore it?

MYSTERY FRUIT

Congrats to Carter, Marlene, Mark, Elsie, Ian, Rebecca, Yvette, Nick, and Vlk for correctly guessing Loquat as the last mystery fruit.

Today we have a fruit that has an exquisite flavor that tastes like a pear that has been soaked in brown sugar. Recent selections of improved varieties have a very fine texture and incredibly large fruit size. The fruit are most often eaten fresh, but they are great in milk shakes and cooked dishes as well. Good luck!

MYSTERY FRUIT

Congrats to Bass, Vlk, Marlene, William, Merle, Bill, Ner, Pinky, Yvette, Mark and Tropical Fruits Mania Thailand for correctly guessing Mangosteen as the last mystery fruit.

Today we have a fantastic fruit that may have originated in China but today enjoys popularity all over the globe. The taste is slightly acidic, but the acidity is diminished if the fruit is eaten when completely ripe. Not only does this tree produce a staggering amount of delicious fruit but also is a beautiful landscape specimen. Good luck!

New Mango Realities
The Philippines grows 3 mango varieties: Carabao, Pico and Pahutan. A 4th variety from India, know as Indian or Katchamitha mango, is popula...r as a green mango but is not grown commercially. The Carabao dominates the mango industry because of its large size and superior flavor. By international standard the Carabao is a small mango and does not have the red skin blush of Florida-bred mangoes such as Tommy Atkins and Keitt. It is proposed that if the Philippines wants to capture a share of fresh export market in the US and Europe we should diversity our mango varieties and try producing some of these Florida-bred large-fruited, red-blushed varieties. Attached is our own selection of a large-fruited, red-blushed mango which can compare well with the Florida mangoes.
