Pre-Participation Physicals

As you may already know, the Kansas State High School Activities Association requires of each student-athlete to have on file with the school principal or superintendent a statement certifying the student has passed a physical examination and is physically fit to participate in interschool athletics.

...

In the past, South Haven made arrangements with Sumner County Family Care Center and has taken a large group of students by bus to have their physicals completed at the beginning of the school year. This arrangement will not be able to continue due to changes in policies.

The Sumner County Family Care Center will be changing the way they provide physicals to student-athletes this coming school year. In an effort to provide more comprehensive and adequate physical examinations they will be requiring students to have appointments made for each student’s physical.

In order to process the large numbers of students who will be needing to complete pre-participation physicals, Sumner County Family Care is asking parents to make appointments as soon as possible; prior to the start of the school year.

According to KSHSAA regulations, students may complete pre-participation physicals any time after May 1st for the preceding school year.

The pre-participation physical forms are available for download on the South Haven Web site

Because of weather advice, we are going to close school at 2:30pm today (Friday 5/19/17). This will ensure all buses get back before the worst of the weather is supposed to hit. And allow staff who live further away to get home safely.

As always, if I close school early the weather won't be as bad as predicted, but if I don't the forecast will be accurate! Safety has to be our priority.

All, we have a huge amount of LOST and FOUND in the south gym, please claim before 3:40pm tomorrow (5/19/2017). Any items left at the end of school today will be donated to charity.

Joyce's retirement reception will be Friday, May 19th from 11:15 AM - 12:45 PM in the North Commons Area. Please come down for a piece of cake and punch.

Interested in Running for the School Board?

An important deadline is coming up soon. In 2015, the Kansas Legislature passed HB 2104, which changed local election dates, including school board elections. Previously school board general elections were held in the spring of odd-numbered years. The new law now requires these elections to be held on the Tuesday following the first Monday in November of odd-numbered years. If necessary, primary elections will be held on the firs...t Tuesday in August of odd-numbered years.

A brief listing of dates of interest includes:

Filing Deadline - Thursday, June 1, 2017

Primary election - Tuesday, August 1, 2017

General election - Tuesday, November 7, 2017

Term Begins - Monday, January 8, 2018

Term expiration dates for school board members scheduled to expire in 2017 under the old plan will now expire on the second Monday in January of 2018. Newly-elected school board members will take office on the second Monday in January following the November election.

At the June 13, 2016 meeting the USD 509 board passed a resolution stating that the terms of board members that would expire at any time in 2017 will now expire on the second Monday in January of 2018.

Three school board positions will be open and on the ballot in 2017 for USD 509 South Haven School patrons. All positions on the school board are now at-large positions. The three at-large positions up for election are currently held by Jeremy Goeckel, Steve Nicholson, and Glennis Zimmerman. Steve and Glennis have both announced that they will not be running for the board again. The filing deadline for these positions is noon on Thursday, June 1, 2017.

There are two ways to file as a candidate. One way to file as a candidate is to pay a $20 filing fee to the county election officer in Sumner County. A person may also become a candidate by filing a petition with the county election officer. The petition must contain the signatures of 50 registered voters of the school district. The general election for these school board positions is scheduled for November 7, 2017.

If you have any questions about running for school board, please contact the USD 509 District Office located at 229 S Kickapoo in South Haven or call the office at 620-892-5215 X1. Brooke Price, District Clerk, has a pamphlet available that explains the duties and responsibilities of a board member which you may also request.
