Eventing is where a single horse and rider show their skill across three disciplines: dressage, cross-country, and show jumping. Originally designed to test cavalry members, the sport has only changed slightly since it's beginnings.
An interesting article about how horse riding is making a small comeback in the military.

Horse racing involves two or more horses over a set distance for competition. It is one of the most ancient of all sports and its basic premise, to identify which of two or more horses is the fastest over a set course or distance, has remained unchanged since the earliest times. One such racehorse is Secretariat. He still holds the track records for the Churchill Downs track (Kentucky Derby), Belmont Stakes (dirt), and Preakness, and other track records. He is still recognized as one the the greatest racehorses in American history.
Caisson Horses are the honorary bearers of those fallen heroes who are to be buried in Arlington National Cemetery. The tradition of Caisson horses also extends to Presidential Inaugural Parade and other historical events in the area of Washington D.C.

Hunter classes were originally designed to test the qualities necessary in a field hunter: excellent manners, efficient and comfortable gaits, and a good, safe jumping style. Today, show hunters are judged on manners, way of going, and conformation. Jumper rounds are judged on the completion of the course and how many penalties that were received.
Today was the annual Fall Horse Show at Maryland Therapeutic Riding. Maryland Therapeutic Riding is a non-profit organization that helps those with disabilities, both mental and physical, through hippotherapy and the healing power of horses. Today midshipmen went to volunteer alongside riders and in the stables doing whatever they could to help such an awesome program!
A walk through military history: Horses were first used to pull chariots in battle starting around 1500 BC. Horses also carried riders who wielded bows or light weaponry. A guide for training chariot horses for Ancient Greece was written around 1350 BC.

The Washington International Horse Show happens every year in Washington D.C. The Show is held at the Verizon Center and runs from October 24th to the 29th. (Some photos taken from the Horse Talk Magazine)
Trail was originally designed to resemble situations a horse and rider might actually encounter when on a trail in a natural habitat, modern trail classes now tend to focus more heavily on agility and manners. An example is the Senior Trail at the AQHA World Show.
