Ben Pon may not not a familiar name, but he is given credit for the introduction of the Volkswagen Type 2, which went on sale to the public on this day in 1950.... Pon visited Wolfsburg in 1946, intending to import the Beetle to the Netherlands after it went back into production following WWII. In 1947 Pon sketched out a concept for small bus that was designed to use the same pan as the Type 1. Volkswagen further developed the idea, but realized a new pan would be needed. It launched the Type 2, also known as the Transporter, and it affectionately became known as the VW Bus, Camper and a myriad of other names. Available in numerous body styles the Type 2 would go on to become an icon of 1960s hippiedom. The Type 2 was produced in factories all over the world with the final Type 2 leaving Brazil production facility on December 13, 2013.
