"As someone who has a disability, something that concerns and in fact offends me is the contradictory notion that in order to protect people with illness or disability, we need to paternalistically limit their right to make decisions and prevent them from having options.
What this [death with dignity] bill actually does is value each individual’s autonomy to make their own medical decision in every way possible." ~Ed Barocas, New Jersey

It provides the compassion of restoring autonomy, the compassion of self-determination. Indeed, just knowing the option is available can provide a form of comfort in itself, even if one decides to never exercise that option.

"Death with Dignity is a personal choice to live and die the way you want to. You don’t have the option to be on this earth, but you should have the option to decide how and when you depart." - Kelly Willis, Arizona

"As a person of faith, ordained minister and professor of Christian ethics for more than three decades...I hope and pray that Maine will make assisted dying legally available. Doing so, I suggest, is a faithful, principled, and compassionate way to affirm the dignity and well-being of the living and the dying." - Rev. Marvin M. Ellison, Maine

The measure would offer the dying an option to minimize needless suffering.
