- Fukushima Daiichi - A long-term solution for Drainage K to prevent occasional overflows of drain water to the ocean is under way. Currently, water from Drainage K is pumped into an adjacent channel, Drainage C, which drains into the protected port area. However, during periods of exceptionally heavy rainfall, pumping capacity may be insufficient to prevent a limited amount of overflow. A new drainage is thus constructed to connect to the original drainage K channel and to direct the water into the port area. See how this is being achieved.

The idea is to train workers to handle difficult jobs safely, in a realistic environment. The 16-meter high mockup of Fukushima Daiichi Unit 1 will be used by workers practicing to remove the temporary cover from the real Unit 1, an essential step toward removing debris from the accident and eventual removal of nuclear fuel. The training will include use of the heavy machinery that will be used to spray anti-scattering agent to prevent the dispersion of contamination when the temporary structure is dismantled. - New family of robots helping clean up Fukushima: A new family of robots that all fit onto a common base is being deployed to clean the second and third floor of reactor buildings at Fukushima Daiichi. One sprays high-pressure water. Another carries around blocks of dry ice, converts it into tiny pellets that get shot at surfaces to decontaminate them. Yet another uses abrasives and suction power. Each can turn on a dime (or a yen), climb over bumps, and communicate wirelessly with controllers.
