An hour past Arroyo Palmarito, vaquero Chikis Medina and I emerged from the desert near a well-traveled road and an immense granite boulder shaped like a pumpki...n. Built into the rock was a small shrine, known as La Virgen. In ages past, people lived here. Now there is only a graffiti covered rock and a crumbling foundation near a rock cistern for holding water. Edie Littlefield Sundby The Mission Walker
The El Camino Real mission trail between Catavina and Arroyo Palmarito is in pretty good shape in places, and completely non-existent in others. Vaquero Chikis Medina kept a tight hold of my horse as I sludged through desert sand. Edie Littlefield Sundby The Mission Walker
This epic adventure with Zihul was a trip to the past...poking around abandoned graveyards & fallen in adobe houses, lying in a cave dwelling in the old goldmine and marveling at the magnificent rock paintings...imagining life thousands of years ago.
