On 16th June 2019, nearly 2 million people in Hong Kong protested against the controversial extradition bill. This is the second mass protest in two consecutive Sundays. Despite the Hong Kong Chief Executive Carrie Lam announced on 15th June 2019 that the Bill is suspended, the protesters demanded the Bill to be withdrawn, prosecute all the police officers who used unlawful force on citizens, journalists and first-aiders, and Carrie Lam to step down. Moreover, many protesters also brought white flowers to pay condolences to Mr Leung, a 35-year-old man who sacrificed himself on 15th June night, where hours earlier he had unfurled an anti-extradition banner. Earlier the day in Auckland, New Zealand, approximately 600 people gathered at Aotea Square in solidarity with Hong Kong anti-extradition bill protests. The rally started off with a one-minute of silence to show respect Mr Leung. Participants include Hong Kongers, New Zealanders, Chinese, Taiwanese, and Europeans. We have the following demands: 1. Never re-initiate amendments to extradition laws; 2. Release of all the political prisoner and bring no further prosecutions; 3. Prosecute all the police officers who used unlawful force on citizens, journalists and first-aiders; and 4. Carrie Lam must step down. We have created a petition in New Zealand with the request to the House of Representatives to express concern at the proposed amendment to extradition law in Hong Kong, which may affect New Zealanders transiting, visiting, or staying in Hong Kong. To date, more than 900 signatures have been collected.
