Today, we would like to congratulate Heather Davis, math interventionist at Maryland School, for being selected as a #WESD December Employee of the Month! Heat...her was nominated by colleagues who appreciate her commitment to helping every child succeed. Heather always puts students and staff first. She ensures that students have the proper tools in order to be able to grow academically. Heather even donated a birdbath to the Maryland garden so that students could have a water source for gardening classes. She works closely with primary teacher teams to coordinate TIER 2/3 intervention for students in math. Heather even adjusts her schedule to best fit the needs of student groups. Heather also meets with teams to share instructional strategies that work for struggling students and she is quick to praise teams for their efforts. Outside of school, Heather coordinates the United Way campaign for her campus and sets an example for others of what excellent school-community involvement looks like. Coworkers describe Heather as dedicated, positive and student-centered. #WESDFamily

Congratulations to our First Grade Team on winning the Coin Drive. For their prize, they get to throw pies at the principal's face. Fortunately, their principal loves to eat. 😀

Had the privilege to read in Ms. Firkus' 7/8th grade ELL classroom. So many beautiful students with such diverse backgrounds.

Grand Canyon University has selected Phil Garitson, principal at Cholla Middle School, as the November STEM Principal of the Month! GCU recognizes those who dis...play “creativity and vision in implementing or supporting STEM-related pathways and programs.” Mr. Garitson was nominated because he promotes STEM teaching in multiple subject areas including science, math and the arts as he understands that this integration will enhance learning experiences for his students. Mr. Garitson also implemented a full-scale Makerspace for students, which provides an opportunity for students to engage in hands-on STEM learning. Even music and art students use the Makerspace to demonstrate what they are learning in unique ways. Mr. Garitson also encourages student leadership in STEM by electing Chief Science Officers. These students participate in school-wide planning of STEM events and are able to connect to the larger STEM community. Mr. Garitson was awarded a goodie basket and plaque from Grand Canyon University and a $500 check from Suoll architects! Congratulations, Mr. Garitson! Thank you for making STEM an important part of the Cholla community. #WESDFamily

Site Coordinator, Cindy Vermeer and Outreach Specialist, Carmen Joseph presented information about their exciting line-up of after school classes and strategies to engage parents and the community! Royal Palm offers Robotics, Health & Fitness, Homework Help, Film Editing, Math, Reading, Yearbook and Community Service/Leadership!

The program also offers an exciting new opportunity called the Grand Canyon University Learning Lounge. The Learning Lounge provides math tutoring for Royal Palm students with exceptional students from Grand Canyon University! This class is facilitated by our very own, amazing teacher Cathy Gupton and is serving over 25 students with a waiting list.

Parent and community engagement is in full swing with collaboration in the 19th North project. The 21st Century Community Learning Center program hosts coffee talks and a menu of exciting parent engagement opportunities! A highlight is the Royal Palm Community/Service leadership class where students identify a community need, and plan a project to give back to the community.

We are so proud of Royal Palm!!! #WESDfamily
