Day 6: Angola!
🇦🇴️ Angola is one of the largest countries in Africa by land area (seventh largest, to be exact). That's about twice the size of France or Texas. After hundreds of years of Portuguese colonization and a devastating civil war that lasted from 1975 to 2002, the country is now one of the world's fastest growing economies. It has strong natural resources, including mineral and petroleum reserves. The geography of Angola is characterized by a beautiful Atlantic coas...tline, as pictured below. The capital city of Luanda, which is located on this very coast, is the third largest Portuguese-speaking city in the world. A booming city of high-rise structures and company headquarters, Luanda is almost famous for one other thing - a very high cost of living! Sadly, the reasons behind this mostly have to do with the devastation of major industries such as farming during the civil war, when land mines destroyed countless crops. However, the country's future looks optimistic, with economic growth forecasted for the next coming years.

Day 5: Andorra!
🇦🇩️ This tiny mountainous country, sandwiched between Spain and France, remains one of western Europe's best kept secrets. After all, it is one of the smallest countries in Europe not only by land area but also by population. It is home to fewer than 100,000 people, many of whom speak the official language of Catalan, although Spanish and French are also widely spoken. Pictured here are the mountains in the rugged Pyrenees range. The mountains of Andorra are a... popular skiing destination. However, the tourists do not cease to arrive when the snow is gone. After all, tourism accounts for an impressive 80% of the entire country's GDP! In the summertime, Andorra continues to appeal to those who are called to the outdoors, with its seemingly endless hiking trails and numerous lakes. Andorra uses the Euro although it is not a member of the European Union. Notably, Andorra itself does not have an army, and instead relies on both of its larger neighbors to defend it. The precipitation in Andorra does not fall evenly across its land area, and this is reflected in its topographic diversity. While the western part of the country resembles much of central Europe, a lot of the eastern sections look distinctively Mediterranean - this is an interesting contrast to have in such a tiny country!

Day 4: American Samoa!
🇦🇸️ Technically, American Samoa isn't a country but is instead is an unorganized territory of the United States. However, we didn't want to miss a chance to show off the beauty of the five islands and two atolls (circular coral reefs) that make up American Samoa. To get a sense of where these islands and atolls are located, they could be described as being *relatively* close to Fiji, New Zealand, And Australia - relative being the operative word here! M...uch like many of their Polynesian neighbors, the scenery of American Samoa is breathtaking and unique. Pictured below is Camel Rock near Pago Pago, which is the territorial capital. If you add up all of the land belonging to American Samoa, it is quite small. This is about the size of the city of Washington, D.C. Another interesting fact about American Samoa is that there are only three land mammals that can be found in the entire territory - and they're all types of bats!

Day 3: Algeria!
🇩🇿Today, we learn about the largest country in Africa (by land area, that is). Algeria can be found in the north of the continent, and has a coastline on the Mediterranean that reaches more than 1,500 kilometers. This beautiful coastline is pictured below. More than 90% of the country's population of around 40 million lives within a relatively close distance to the sea. Although the country is best known for hosting part of the amazing Sahara Desert, there are ...also other varied landscapes to be found such as mountain ranges (the Tell Atlas Mountains) and large urban centres (Algiers, Oran, Constantine, and more). However, the vast desert is still an important part of Algeria's makeup - the hottest temperature ever recorded in the Algerian desert was 51.3 degrees Celsius (that's almost 125 degrees Fahrenheit)!!

Day 2: Albania!
🇦🇱 Pictured here is the city of Berat, which is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. It was given this honor because it is a rare example of a town that has been well-preserved since the time of the Ottoman Empire. Albania is located in southeastern Europe. In recent years, it has become an emerging tourist destination, although many places in the country's 29,000 square km (slightly smaller than Maryland) remain relatively undisturbed. However, travelers who do make... the trip remark upon the country's beautiful beaches and welcome hospitality. Its capital city of Tirana is notable for being one of the only capital cities of the world to not be home to a McDonald's restaurant! Instead, visitors can sample Albanian cuisine, much of which may seem familiar to fans of Mediterranean food because of its use of fresh herbs like mint, rosemary, basil, and oregano.

Day 1: Afghanistan!
🇦🇫️ Pictured here is one of the six stunning deep blue lakes in Band-e-Amir Nation...al Park, which is located near the center of this mountainous landlocked country. Although Afghanistan has held a prominent place in the media in recent years, many who read these news stories may be surprised to learn that Afghanistan is more than just desert and political turmoil (although the last three decades in the country have unfortunately been immersed in major unrest and violence). Historically, Afghanistan was a key stop on the legendary Silk Road, which placed it at forefront of world trade, a fact that is reflected in the country's diverse heritage. Its flag, pictured below, is notable for being one of the only flags in the world that has miniature versions of itself on it. The country has a population of 33 million - roughly the same as Canada or Venezuela. However, don't call these people "Afghani". This is a common misnomer, and the term "Afghani" actually refers to the currency! The people of Afghanistan are properly referred to as "Afghans".
