The phenomenal turnaround of S.J.Suryah
S.J.Suryah has always been a better writer- director than an actor. Ajith Kumar's rejection of #New made him appear in front of the camera for the first time in a full time role. The success of the movie made him take up acting full time. What followed was something that he himself wouldn't have imagined. A flurry of duds like #Viyapaari, #Thirumagan, #KalvaninKaadhali to name a few. It was high time he got back to direction, which was... his forte. His long pending project #Isai was still under the wraps and he decided to revive it. This time along with acting and directing he also donned the hat of the music director. A decent album, a good storyline with some neat performances from Sathyaraj and S.J.Suryah is what #Isai was all about. Little did we know that this was going to be the first delivery of a stupendous second innings of this man. This time, not as a director but as an actor. And then the best of the things happened. Karthik Subburaj's #Iraivi. I have never seen someone overshadow Vijay Sethupathi so effortlessly. But Suryah did that. As #Arul, a struggling director he completely owned the movie. It would have been easy for us to write it off as a fluke. But then, he wouldn't give us that chance. He carefully picked and chose roles that would do justice to his calibre. He got himself associated with #Nenjam_marapathillai , #Iravaakaalam, #SPYder, and #Mersal. With #SPYder he has sent a clear statement. He is here to stay as an ACTOR. And if directors are intelligent enough, he can become K-town's answer for who will be the next Prakash Raj. With the long pending #NenjamMarapathillai, the diwali release #Mersal and Maya director Ashwin Saravanan 's #Iravaakaalam all of which might see the light this year, we will get to watch him more on screen this year. Hope all of them turn out to be huge successes.
P.S: I sincerely pray that directors don't run to him only with negative roles and typecast him just like they did with Prakash Raj. 🙏
To reiterate something that I have stated for a long time, the primary purpose of a remake is to cater to the majority of the audience who haven't seen the movie and when it comes to movies like Special 26 which did not have a wide reach in Tamilnadu, the director is at the liberty to make necessary changes to cater to the new audience. This is where Vignesh ShivN does a neat job. He takes the core plot and builds around a neat little back story to appeal to the masses. It i...s refreshing to see Suriya turn back the clock to pre Ayan days. This is easily his best performance since Ayan. The second hero of the film is Anirudh Ravichander who has made up for the disappointing outing 3 weeks ago. The film is a neat work barring the over the top climax and some needless dialogues at places. For those who have seen the original, there are few surprises and a lot of disappointments. And for the others, this is a perfect movie for the festive weekend.
#Thaana_Serntha_Kootam - Crowd Puller.
Theeran Athikaram Ondru absolutely riveting. Brilliance from the word go. There is immense level of detailing that has gone into the writing and it is translated extremely well on the screen. Full credits to H.Vinoth. 3 years of hardwork has been really fruitful. Karthi perfectly fits the bill as Theeran Thirumaran. Tailor made for the role. And Ghibran , running out of adjectives for this man 😍😍 Ignore the initial cliches and the needless song in the second half. This is the best tamil movie of 2017
With Shah Rukh Khan, all that people would recollect is his charm and style on screen. Although, most of his recent movies reinstate this fact, there is no denying that this guy is a fantabulous actor. Be it wily Ajay whose soul purpose is to avenge the death of his father or Don, the cunning, witty international criminal, or the modern version of Devdas, or Kabir Khan a former sportsperson who has to prove to the nation that his patriotism is no lesser than any other citizen..., Mohan Bhargava, an NRI who returns to his homeland only to realise it's plight and leave his high profile job at NASA to work for the betterment of his nation, and a lot more, this man has had a hell lot of roles to prove his mettle to the world. A series of duds in the past few years cannot take away all that he has done for the past 3 decades. He was, he is and he will always be the 'Badshah of Bollywood'.
Although there are a number of scenes to showcase his brilliance, this scene and this movie is my personal favourite. This was the probably the most defining moment in SRK's career. From a movie that almost went unnoticed at the time of its release and later went on to become an internet classic - Swades: We the People. The scene where Mohan goes to Haridas' house and the scene that follows are the pivotal points of the movie which is when he gets to realise the real situation of the nation. Filled with so much emotions, SRK absolutely nailed it.
#MeyaadhaMaan Ratna Kumar's directorial debut and Karthik Subbaraj 's debut production is possibly the most honest movie to have come out this year. It is one of these rare films that come out as a surprise package, delivering quality entertainment when you least expect it from it. After a long time, you get to see a movie filled with characters and not actors. While all 4 lead characters share equal screen space, it is Vivek Prasanna as Vinoth who dominates as a performer.... The proposal scene is probably one of the most natural scene you will see in Tamil cinema in a long time. #Vaibhav nails it with his dialogue deliveries. Everything be it the charactersx dialogues or the songs used in the background have been well written.
Leave all your thinking hats aside get your ticket and a bucket of popcorn. You are in for 150 minutes of joy ride.
#SPYder: A movie that should have been on the league of #Thuppaki fails due to poor treatment and flawed execution of the last thirty minutes. That said, the movie is packed with an ample number of scenes which can hold you to the edge of your seats and does entertain you to an extent. If not for anything else, watch it for Actor S.J.Suryah who, in his post #Iraivi career, can hardly keep a foot wrong. He delivers a joker- like (ARM just cannot stop using Nolan references ) performance and one would definitely wish he got more screentime.
After a few below par promotional materials, a better product from the team of #TikTikTik Official teaser of India's first space film. The visuals still look underwhelming though.
Saw #BabyDriver yesterday and was amazed by its soundtrack which had dialogues beatboxed into it. Least did I expect Anurag Basu to come up with this fascinating fable called #JaggaJasoos just hours later. Yes, I've seen several musicals and they've bugged me too but this one is an exception. This one is crafted with heart and soul from a man who believes in his craftsmanship and a crew that can back him up. From the very first shot where the camera unfolds from what looked l...ike a black and white stock motion to its slow transition into some picturesque landscapes of Jagga's world built by Ravi Varman. What was even more pleasing is the way they delivered some theatrical instructions ( which I never listen to ) through music. Something like 'switch off your mobile phones' also feels good when it is conveyed in the way they want us to hear. All the episodes had a comical framework and they do lead us to an ultimate adventure that Basu wants us to experience. Pritam's music is even better when it blends with Jagga's adventures and Varman's visuals. They're so soothing and will remain with me for some time. Katrina Kaif was a letdown but she still manages to give her second best performance till date.
Basu was right when he said 'The movie might end up either at this end or that end'. You'll love it if you're willing to accept and appreciate a man's creativity. Jagga is a character to celebrate and if this doesn't work out, please sign a contract with Netflix or Amazon Prime Video India to take this forward as a series.
After all that trash that Bollywood has been doling out in the name of 'Blockbusters', here's a film that truly deserves to be one. Mom is a film that has a tried and tested premise, a revenge saga. However, it is the powerhouse performances from Sridevi and Nawazuddin Siddiqui that make this film powerful in terms of making an impact. Akshaye Khanna as the police officer is....well, functional, for the lack of a better word. Although the songs(there are hardly any) were passable, ARR's background scores in certain scenes were excellent. Highly recommended, go for it.

Although the hike in ticket price is something condemnable, this decision by the theatre owners to go on an indefinite strike is suicidal. This will not only affect the movies that are currently being screened but also the new releases. Starting with #IvanThandiran, that released today, whose run will be cut down. #VikramVedha that is slated for a release next week might be postponed too. Selvaraghavan's #NenjamMarapathillai has already been postponed twice in 2 weeks. This w...ill trigger a series of movies to push their release to a later date. Given that the first half of 2017 was already a poor show for Tamil cinema with only 4-5 hits, the only hope of redemption was the biggies that might release in the later half. Almost every single star out there has a movie lined up for release. Noone would want to compromise on a solo release to maximize their earnings in the first weekend. Starting from #VIP2, we've #Dheeran #Thupparivalan #ThaanaSernthaKootam #Vivegham #Mersal and #Kaala lined up. With very limited festive slots available, this make the competition tougher and small budget movies will vanish into the air. This is definitely not a good sign. I hope the theatre owners realise the impact and call off this strike asap.
