The Co-op stands in solidarity with our queer Latinx siblings who were the targets of an attack of mass gun violence last night. As a community, we mourn the 50... deceased and pray for the 53 injured. Homophobia, transphobia, and Islamophobia have no place on our campus, in our country, or in the world that we envision. We ask that all who read this take some time out of their day to check in with their queer loved ones and reflect on how we can come together as a community to support one another and affirm our identities and rightful places in the world.

We stand with Yale students who refuse to tolerate the continued disrespect of people of color in a place that calls itself their home. Their intergenerational pain is an injustice -- it should not be continued for the sake of anyone's history lesson. Together, we rid this campus of what John C. Calhoun represents. About 1,000 Yale students filled Battell Chapel today at 4pm after Secretary Kim Goff-Crews sent an email to the student body calling for an open forum to discu...ss the naming decisions. Many students were wearing T-shirts bearing the logo "[Aretha] Franklin College." Many students were also wearing duct tape over their mouths. During President Salovey's opening remarks, students threw monopoly and fake money towards the front, bringing to mind the 250 million dollar donation from an alum who wanted Benjamin Franklin College. During the discussion, students who spoke expressed the exhaustion, pain, and anger that they were feeling. Some statements were live tweeted on DOWN's account. https://twitter.com/DOWNatYale

"If Salovey is tacitly admitting that symbols are all-enduring yet fluid, the community can intervene to wrest control of the latent meaning from a signifier that is unlikely to be changed.

This is happening already. The stenciled portrait of a regal Aretha Franklin covers corkboards across campus. “FRANKLIN COLLEGE: We Deserve R-E-S-P-E-C-T”, it states. On social media, students are changing their profile pictures to the same blue image of Aretha Franklin singing into a micr...ophone. They post photos of Aretha Franklin next to Peter Salovey, superimposed over $100 bills. Outside of the Women’s Center, a giant banner reads “WE OUT HERE. WE’VE BEEN HERE. WE AIN’T LEAVING. WE ARE LOVED”. To its right, the portrait of Aretha Franklin, who holds an Honorary Degree from Yale, seems to heighten the message: “Baby girl, you hold the power.”

On April 27, the Yale Corporation announced the names of the new residential colleges: Pauli Murray College and Benjamin Franklin College. It also chose to keep the name of Calhoun College, despite being made aware of much student pain and protest. While we are thrilled by the Corporation’s decision to name a college after Murray, an exceptional activist, poet, and theologian, the Corporation’s decision to honor Benjamin Franklin as the namesake of one of the new colleges is ...disappointing and reveals the ways in which Yale has failed to listen, or has prioritized other factors over the wellbeing of its students.

As students, we choose to honor Aretha Franklin. She is an extraordinary musician, often called “the voice of the Civil Rights Movement,” and was a recipient of an honorary degree from Yale in 2010. President Obama once said, "American history wells up when Aretha sings." Like Aretha, we’re just asking for the respect we deserve.

In light of recent events, The Yale Women's Center wants to offer individuals on campus the space to reflect and discuss the recent decisions announced by President Salovey on the continual use of Calhoun College, the decision to end the use of "master," and the names of the new residential colleges. The center will be open tonight until 10pm. There is tea, coffee and Claire's Cake. This is a time of mixed emotions for our community, and the Center is, as always, open to be a listening ear.
