See you all Thursday at the New Haven courthouse!

Brought to you by Abdul-Razak Zachariah, via Javier Cienfuegos:

"To all friends and family, especially those who work in New Haven or at Yale: A 17-year-old New... Haven teenager was arrested for allegedly assaulting a Yale professor back in November of 2015. This teenager, Aymir Holland, seems to have only been present at the assault (though not an actual participant), yet has been presented with a trial that could place him in prison for up to 61 years. Despite his age, in a state that has allowed for teens aged 16 to 18 to be tried in family courts, Aymir is set to be tried as an adult. This is extremely ridiculous considering that a sentence of 61 years is someone's entire life and will keep a young man who was in a bad situation from living his life fully. There is no need for people to know if he is a good student or not. Or if he seemed like "one of those kids who'd do that sort of thing" or not. What matters is that he can unfairly have his life taken away and be tried as an adult without regard for the history and impact of such imprisonment on the lives of many Black and brown people in America. If you want to learn more about this situation, please read this article as well as the article it links to regarding the original story on the assault. If you find yourself moved to help Aymir receive a fair trial and a chance to live his FULL life outside of prison, here are links to a petition, a GoFundMe to support his bail and an event page for a protest at his pre-trial hearing to move his case to juvenile court. I hope people take the time to learn about this problem, especially people that work with and care about youth in their communities!"

Black Student Alliance at Yale
July 7

The Black Student Alliance at Yale stands in solidarity with Alton Sterling and Philando Castile’s families and communities as well as all the families and comm...unities that have lost loved ones to police brutality. We will continue advocating for Black bodies and we believe in using our voices, our minds and at times our bodies to fight for a world where Black people are safe, where queer people are safe, where Muslims are safe, where Latinx people are safe, where marginalized people do not have to live in fear. We acknowledge that these fights can appear as small as surviving a Bio seminar as the only person of color in the room or as big as marching in protest. We recognize all of these fights as unquestionably important.

We urge our members and Black people everywhere to engage in self-care as they process the growing list of lives lost at the hands of the Police. This includes, but is not limited to, taking a day off, turning off your computer and phone, going on a run and finding a shoulder to cry on. There will be many protests and press conferences to come, more articles to be written and read, and moments of silence to be held; your mental and physical health are important.

BSAY also refuses to be complicit in any apathy toward the recent lives lost in Istanbul (41), Bangladesh (22) and Baghdad (250). Our hearts ache for our Muslim siblings who continue to be targets of senseless and horrific violence.

To all those lost, Rest in Power.

The Co-op stands in solidarity with our queer Latinx siblings who were the targets of an attack of mass gun violence last night. As a community, we mourn the 50... deceased and pray for the 53 injured. Homophobia, transphobia, and Islamophobia have no place on our campus, in our country, or in the world that we envision. We ask that all who read this take some time out of their day to check in with their queer loved ones and reflect on how we can come together as a community to support one another and affirm our identities and rightful places in the world.

Descansa en paz. Rest in power.

There is evidence that female politicians are more effective than male ones, bringing more money to their home districts and getting more co-sponsorship for their legislation. We stand with Yale students who refuse to tolerate the continued disrespect of people of color in a place that calls itself their home. Their intergenerational pain is an injustice -- it should not be continued for the sake of anyone's history lesson. Together, we rid this campus of what John C. Calhoun represents. In the face of administrative failure, Calhoun College will now be #FormerlyKnownAsCalhoun.

"In solidarity with student protests, this plug-in for Google Chrome changes all mentions of “Calhoun College” on Google Chrome to “#WrongMoveYale, and “Benjamin Franklin College” or “Ben Franklin College” or “Benny Frank College” to “Aretha Franklin College.” The symbolic replacement of these colleges’ names does not in any way negate the shameful history of slavery. Rather, we want to address this atrocious past by no longer glorifying one of the strongest proponents of slavery.

Yale, changing Calhoun College’s name was possible. We’ve done it. So can you."

Thank you Stephanie Siow (Pierson ‘17), Wei Jie Koh (YNUS ‘17), Parag Bhatnagar (Silliman, YNUS’17), Rohan Naidu (Branford, YNUS ‘17)!

About 1,000 Yale students filled Battell Chapel today at 4pm after Secretary Kim Goff-Crews sent an email to the student body calling for an open forum to discu...ss the naming decisions. Many students were wearing T-shirts bearing the logo "[Aretha] Franklin College." Many students were also wearing duct tape over their mouths. During President Salovey's opening remarks, students threw monopoly and fake money towards the front, bringing to mind the 250 million dollar donation from an alum who wanted Benjamin Franklin College. During the discussion, students who spoke expressed the exhaustion, pain, and anger that they were feeling. Some statements were live tweeted on DOWN's account. https://twitter.com/DOWNatYale

"If Salovey is tacitly admitting that symbols are all-enduring yet fluid, the community can intervene to wrest control of the latent meaning from a signifier that is unlikely to be changed.

This is happening already. The stenciled portrait of a regal Aretha Franklin covers corkboards across campus. “FRANKLIN COLLEGE: We Deserve R-E-S-P-E-C-T”, it states. On social media, students are changing their profile pictures to the same blue image of Aretha Franklin singing into a micr...ophone. They post photos of Aretha Franklin next to Peter Salovey, superimposed over $100 bills. Outside of the Women’s Center, a giant banner reads “WE OUT HERE. WE’VE BEEN HERE. WE AIN’T LEAVING. WE ARE LOVED”. To its right, the portrait of Aretha Franklin, who holds an Honorary Degree from Yale, seems to heighten the message: “Baby girl, you hold the power.”

"Yale understands that a name can be powerful, so we get Murray, but it firmly believes that a name is still a name, so we get Franklin."

“Listen, dear, I realize that you’ve been hurt deeply because I have been there,” drawls Aretha Franklin at the start of “A Rose Is Still a Rose.” The titular track in her 1998 album, released through Arista after a long hiatus, is a tremendously slick piece of R&B—Franklin’s showstopping vocal pote…

On April 27, the Yale Corporation announced the names of the new residential colleges: Pauli Murray College and Benjamin Franklin College. It also chose to keep the name of Calhoun College, despite being made aware of much student pain and protest. While we are thrilled by the Corporation’s decision to name a college after Murray, an exceptional activist, poet, and theologian, the Corporation’s decision to honor Benjamin Franklin as the namesake of one of the new colleges is ...disappointing and reveals the ways in which Yale has failed to listen, or has prioritized other factors over the wellbeing of its students.

As students, we choose to honor Aretha Franklin. She is an extraordinary musician, often called “the voice of the Civil Rights Movement,” and was a recipient of an honorary degree from Yale in 2010. President Obama once said, "American history wells up when Aretha sings." Like Aretha, we’re just asking for the respect we deserve.
