From Toby: Hi there. I am doing this thing with Parlour where - if you want - you can organise a gig at your place, invite your friends, and have me come along and play solo. Apparently you can do it even if you don't actually have a parlour. So, if you live on Australia's Eastern Seaboard, and are interested in this idea, and want to do it sometime in March or April then go to parlour.tours/tobymartin to investigate the details. This video gives you an idea of the deep level of professionalism, craft and passion you can expect from said gig.

Toby is bringing Songs From Northam Avenue to the wonderful Casula Powerhouse (Sydney) on April 14th. He will be joined by Mohammad Lelo on Qanun, Dang Lan on Dan Tranh and Dan Bau, Bree van Reyk on drums, Zoe Hauptmann on bass, plus some more special guests, and all with Lyndal Irons' photos and John Meredith's interviews as the backdrop. It's gonna be a special one! Presented by Urban Theatre Projects and Casula Powerhouse
Sydneysiders! This is happening on Saturday night at Carriageworks! Songs From Northam Avenue played in full, with the full 7-piece line up. 'Tis shaping up to be a very special evening.
Songs From Northam Avenue was commissioned by Urban Theatre Projects
The inimitable @tobymartinmusic launching his amazing Songs From Northam Ave. last night in devastatingly moving fashion. Friends for over 20 years and consistently blowing my mind. Has me bursting with excitement for what's in store for us with @youthgroupband album 5 starting today. The times, they are a-xciting.
Toby has an album coming out next year, 'Songs From Northam Avenue', and this is the first single from it...!
Two exciting announcements for me today. First up, I’m thrilled to say that I’ll be playing at the wonderful Carriageworks in Sydney next April. This will be se...ven musicians, the full Folk-Rock-Arabic-Vietnamese jam band catastrophe, playing material from my soon-to-be-released album ‘Songs From Northam Avenue’. Tickets and info here: http://carriageworks.com.au/events/songs-northam-ave/
AND…I have new music to share. The first single 'Spring Feeling' is out! You can watch the video here - it features Mohammed Lelo on qanun, Dang Lan on dan tranh, Bree van Reyk on drums, with some enthusiastic help from the Annandale North Public School choir. It’s an uncharacteristically happy song for me, and it feels slightly strange to release a song like this in these dark times. But maybe that's a good thing.
After releasing four albums, all with good songs on them, Youth Group took a long break from being a band in 2009.
Then, in 2015, they surfaced again, for a handful of gigs to mark their album Skeleton Jar's 10th anniversary.
Now they’re threatening to make a fifth record, and they have a bunch of new songs ready to try out.
Also on the set-list: some songs from the first four records.
Unfortunately, although there can never be a Youth Group without drummer Danny Allen, for this one night only Youth Group will be without Danny, who is stateside.
Sad news that Troy Horse is closing its doors. For those without intimate knowledge of the Sydney music scene, Troy Horse was a rehearsal studio originally in Newtown, then in Alexandria, and run by Chris ‘Chrisso’ McBurnie. Youth Group have rehearsed there since we formed late last century. We’ve written and demoed almost all our songs there, from Country Tour to the current crop of unreleased tunes.
But more than that, Troy Horse helped to form and sustain a Sydney music... community. Our musical compadres rehearsed there and the environment at the Horse was friendly and supportive and funny. That was largely due to Chrisso’s personality. Chrisso is delighted in targeting musicians with elaborate pranks – fake letters, mock posters – and it felt like a badge of honour to be the victim of a Chrisso stunt. This is exactly the sort of sentimental memorial that he’d hate, but Chrisso is a fantastic person and we want to wish him all the best. Hopefully he finds a new endeavour that has just as much scope for making (gentle) fun of musicians.
10 years ago this week we were playing in Brisbane and ended up doing a rough yet heartfelt version of this song. It is just one of so many aching, ageless songs by one Grant McLennan. Quiet Heart. The Wrong Road. Dusty In Here. Bachelor Kisses. Bye Bye Pride...and that's not even the hits. Grant, we didn't know you, but it feels like we did.
2015 was a vintage year for us. We played shows for the first time in five years, and had a sweet time doing it. Thanks so much to everyone who came along, and made our hearts glad. So, what will 2016 hold? Will YG record their fifth album? Will they play some more? Will the Rabbitohs win another flag? Will everyone still care about Star Wars? We will find out...
In the meantime, friends, merry festivus and best wishes for the new year.
ps... We leave you with our humble contribution to the Christmas song canon. Hey, it's not Fairytale of New York, but y know...
We are stoked to be on the Smudge 'Manilow' tribute album. We such were fans of this album when it came back. It still is an absolute classic. We just couldn't believe that Danny owned the exact same casio keyboard that was on the toilet on the back cover. Everything was justified.
Manilow Tribute test pressings. We're almost there! Gonna have a listening party with courtney barnett, Evan Dando, Lou Barlow, Seja, Undead Apes, ben mason, Ba...baganoüj, Ratcat, Sam Shinazzi, Sleepy, Leti & Maryanne. Youth Group, Skylar Gudasz, Two Am I, Simon & Alannah, DJ Nic Dalton & The Gloomchasers, Little Lovers and YOU!
