I owe a huge debt to Bobby Broom, one of the greatest guitar players in jazz, for his inspiring musical example during the many years that I lived in Chicago. My friends and I would go to hear him and his trios almost every week at Pete Mil...lers, Andy's, or The Green Mill. Bobby was generous enough to give me a lesson and I will never forget it. First, he sussed out what I actually understood harmonically vs. what I could hear/fake my way through. Second, he took extra time to deconstruct some basic guitar voicings and put them on the violin in a playable way. Honestly it's not often that music teachers, especially jazz musicians teaching jazz (sorry to say), go to the trouble of bringing the student along every step of the way. Of course the great teachers do that. And Bobby is one of them. I'm sure that there will be many pearls of wisdom in his forthcoming videos so check 'em out! Meer weergeven
I'm honored to be an "artist in residence" for the first time in my life, starting tomorrow, at Serenbe, located in Chattahoochee Hills, GA. While there I'll be reflecting on the past few years of my creative life as well as laying the groundwork for some future projects. I'll also be re-adjusting to some honest-to-God real southern humidity, spotting kudzu, meeting some amazing people, eating badass food, and eventually bringing it back in the music... to all y'all.

Some folks might remember this tune of mine from "The Magic Number," a love song I penned for BKNYC. In a double nod to Lookofsky and Ponty I decided to re-record this tune on Baritone violin.
Thank you to everyone who made Wednesday night's concert such a success!!! I am honored to have had the opportunity to share the stage with Lage Lund, Matt Penman, and Obed Calvaire. Thanks to our crack film crew Erin Harper Dennis Connors, Janis Vogel, Erin Greenwell, Adam Benn, and Ning Li. Thank you to Elena Zucker for wo-manning our CD table. Thanks to Steve Elliott for the generous loan of hi...s sweet '64 Princeton Reverb. Thanks to Matthias Lehner Violins for keeping my axe in good health and for the best re-hairs ever. Thanks to Eric Aceto for designing the best violin pickup yet. Thanks to Ryan Ramirez for the excellent sound. Thanks to Jana La Sorte for getting the word out. And, of course, thank you to everyone at Rabbit Moon Productions Inc. and Jazz Standard for presenting us at such a great NYC venue. Meer weergeven

Undoubtedly one of my favorite Zbigniew Seifert compositions, Quo Vadis is a spartan tune that is at once bittersweet and cathartic. Zbiggy was certainly pondering the title's meaning while he recorded this, as was everyone else in the band..., and the evidence is on the vinyl. For me the album "Passion" is possibly the greatest jazz violin record ever made because Seifert transcends his instrument and renders it inconsequential to the overall impact of the music. Fellow Kentuckian Harry Lookofsky ended up in NYC playing w/ the NBC Symphony under Arturo Toscanini in the 40's. He was obsessed w/ bebop and, in 1958, recorded an album called "Stringsville" w/ the assistance of Hank Jones and the young Bob Brookmeyer. He was also the first violinist I know of to record jazz on the baritone/tenor violin. This Charlie Parker tune is my tribute to him. I wish we could have met.

One of my greatest inspirations has always been the great Jean-Luc Ponty. When I was in middle school I discovered Frank Zappa thanks to Harck Pickett and Bleik Pickett. Jean-Luc did a record called "King Kong: Jean-Luc Ponty Plays The Musi...c of Frank Zappa" for Blue Note Records/Pacific in 1970 and, to my knowledge this is the only Blue Note session that Zappa ever made. I think "Twenty Small Cigars" really showcases Zappa's compositional lyricism and range. Meer weergeven

I got a book called "Daily Rituals: How Artists Work" after hearing about it from Stephanie Nilles and, after a cursory read, I have deduced that the adage "the early bird gets the worm" applies unless you are a drug-addicted or alcoholic genius. If that's the case then just keep doing what you're doing.

I've stayed away from this tune for years simply because it's so iconic and because I love it in it's original form. But then I decided to do this.

This is the title track from our new CD. It's my arrangement of a song that was co-written in 1957 by the great Stuff Smith and Dizzy Gillespie!
